Italian salad dressing is composed of olive oil, vinegar, garlic and spices. It differs from the classic French salad dressing in that it has a more robust flavor from the garlic and the addition of Italian spices oregano and basil.

The classic French salad dressing is also based on a vinaigrette (oil and vinegar) and includes the addition of minced fresh herbs, mustard or garlic. The commercial bottled versions found on grocery store shelves today tend to be sweeter, creamier and a  red-orange color from the addition of tomato paste.

A basic salad vinaigrette is based on a formula of combining three parts oil to one part vinegar, seasoned with salt and pepper. An infinite number of citrus juices, seasonings and herbs can be added to make the mixture dress up all types of salad greens.

Ranch dressing — an Oklahoma favorite that’s used as much for pizza dipping as it is for topping salad greens — was created in the 1950s. The mixture of buttermilk, mayonnaise and seasonings was first served at the Hidden Valley Guest Ranch in Santa Barbara, CA.  Guests there liked it so much they urged the owner to package the spices so they could prepare the dressing at home. That was the beginning of the popular Hidden Valley  Original Ranch salad dressing products. Low-fat versions of this dressing offer a more healthful alternative.

  • Snap beans originally grew in southern Mexico, Costa Rica, Honduras and Guatemala. They were planted alongside corn, which helped prop up the bean vines.
  • All legumes, including green beans, grow in pods.
